Kelman Hut

Stayed a couple of days at Kelman hut during a alpine course. The hut has a wel equipped kitchen and a hughe dorm on the first floor. On base floor there is a small room up to 4 people and another one with 2 bunks for guides. There is enough space to get dressed befor le going out and to store wet gear after returning. 2 toilets are situated outside and it might be a bit challenging in bad weather. Electricity is provided by solar but very limited. Water is stored in big containers outside. There is no running water. If you go overnight, take your own matrass.

The hut is strategically located to club several peaks at the upper Tasman glacier. The best way to get to it is by flying from Aoraki Mount Cook village. It is also possible to walk in or out but you have to have in mind that the walk out might take more than 12 hours over very rough terrain o we the Tasman glacier. The hut has sleeping bunks for 30 but 4 cannot be used as the roof leaks during storms. The kitchen/dinning space has plenty space and it is equipped with 4 gas double burners. Have care when going toilets as the ladder is very steep and can get frozen, specially on storms. As any of the NZAC huts it is equipped with a radio that calls directly to the Department of Conservation, DOC. In summer time at 19:00 you get a weather and avalanche report.
